FORMER premiers John Brumby and Bob Carr have joined Geoff Gallop to defend the role of the states in the wake of former prime minister Bob Hawke's call for their abolition.
Mr Brumby, a former Victorian premier, said the federation had delivered positive outcomes for Australia, and better value for money than a unitary system.
