Empty beds in new birth centre - ABC Online

ACT Government documents reveal Canberra's new state-of-the art Birth Centre has an occupancy rate of less than 50 per cent.

The Birth Centre is run by midwives for women wanting a natural birth in home like surrounds.

It is enormously popular and each year 400 women miss out on the service.

Last year the centre was expanded from three birth suites to five as part of the new Women's and Children's Hospital.

But documents obtained under FOI laws show the new centre has an occupancy rate of less than 50 per cent most days.

The Friends of the Birth Centre says that is because staff numbers have not increased in line with the expansion.

The FOI documents also show since the new hospital opened it has received 17 complaints from maternity inpatients, ranging from concerns about care to early discharge.

Meanwhile the Government has publicly acknowledged its general maternity ward is running close to capacity.
