Residents in the central west slopes and tablelands are being warned to remain vigilant with the regions' bushfire danger period coming up.
The Canobolas RFS says late January and February tend to be the worst period for the Orange, Cowra and Cabonne districts.
The community safety officer Geoff Selwood says landholders should also prepare a bushfire survival plan for their livestock and pets.
He says the central west has not escaped the danger.
"No, we're only just starting," he said.
"Traditionally our worst time is around the Australia Day long weekend and into February.
"It runs very fast here in the tablelands and due to grazing country and cropping."
A number of blazes have broken out in the region in the past few weeks but crews have managed to prevent any properties being destroyed.
Mr Selwood says horses are of particular concern.
"They're a part of the family.
"They're like the dog and the cat.
"People will put themselves at risk to actually protect their horse.
"From the Canberra fire research afterwards in 2003 it was found people were actually leaving Canberra out to where they had their horses adjisted and were going into the fire to get the horses and try and protect their horses." 20s
