Weekend jail for robbery, assault - ABC Online

Posted December 18, 2012 12:12:41

Two Canberra men who viciously bashed and robbed a 54-year-old man in his home have been sentenced to periodic detention.

Matthew James Burge, 21, from Gilmore and Matthew James Hood, 20, from Calwell pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and property damage.

In February, the pair had been drinking at the Calwell Club before going to the victim's house where they thought there might be more alcohol.

They then watched pornography.

But Burge accused the man of showing them child pornography and kicking him in the head and body.

The pair then stole the man's wallet and demanded his pin number.

When he refused, Hood kicked him twice in the head.

The man suffered a broken eye socket and lacerated spleen.

Today in the ACT Supreme Court, Justice Hillary Penfold told the pair that alcohol abuse was the primary cause of their offending.

She sentenced Burge to three years jail, with the first 12 months to be served as periodic detention and the remainder suspended with a good behaviour order.

Hood has been sentenced to two years and nine months jail, with 12 months periodic detention and the remainder suspended.
