THE Sydney Blue Sox defeated the Melbourne Aces 10-8 yesterday in Melbourne to win their Australian Baseball League series three games to one, while the Canberra Cavalry beat the Brisbane Bandits 9-2 for their fourth series win in a row.
Trent Schmutter finished 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as the Blue Sox squandered a 5-0 lead but came back for the win in a back-and-forth battle at Melbourne Ballpark.
With 14 runs scored from the sixth inning on, Schmutter delivered a game-winning single to centre field in the top of the ninth inning, scoring JD Williams and Jacob Younis for a 10-8 lead with the Blue Sox down to their final out, propelling them to their third win in the four-game series.
Melbourne had scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, staking an 8-6 lead heading into the final frame.
With the bases loaded in the ninth, Younis drew a walk to trail 8-7. Then after a strikeout and the Sox down to their final strike, Michael Lysaught beat out an infield single to score James Robbins and tie the game at 8-8. That set the stage for Schmutter to record his third hit of the game, giving the Sox the two-run lead.
The Blue Sox are back in action on Thursday night against the Adelaide Bite in a four-game series -- all at Sydney's Blacktown International Sportspark.
In Canberra, in the final match of their round-eight four-game series, the Cavalry blew past the Bandits. John Holdzkom started out with a quick 1-2-3 first inning including two strikeouts, and sent the Bandits a message that he was out for the win.
With Canberra's fourth successive series win, the Cavalry head into two four-game match-ups against the Perth Heat for top spot on the ABL ladder.
