AUSTRALIA and the US will agree to a closer strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean tomorrow as part of plans to beef up military ties in a region Canberra believes has become of critical importance to its future security.
But the move to focus the ANZUS alliance on the Indian Ocean will be done progressively in a manner Canberra hopes will not alienate China after it protested the decision last year to rotate US marines through Darwin.
