THE power of women in Australian society has increased dramatically in my lifetime. Women now play a dominant role in all aspects of our public life and our nation is a better place as a result.
We have our first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, who has demonstrated a toughness previously associated with men only. Regardless of politics, she is respected by fair-minded Australians for her guts and determination. A lesser person would have collapsed under the strain by now. Recent remarks by Alan Jones have only served to cement her reputation as a person of resolve under pressure.
