A GROUP of Australians enjoyed a rare experience in Beijing a few days ago. Outsiders in China, especially in the capital, at whose heart lies a Forbidden City, can feel they are being kept at a distance, however polite the formal expressions of officialdom.
But on this occasion the Aussie crowd sat alongside senior Chinese politicians, officials, businesspeople and journalists inside a government compound - a former royal Manchu palace - to chat and to watch on TV as Beijing's new leadership team emerged, strolling the communist catwalk in their dark suits and red ties only a few hundred metres away in the Great Hall of the People.
