TONY Abbott's Coalition will reform the way research grants are awarded after intense lobbying from Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt, who declared that experienced researchers were wasting their time endlessly applying for grants.
The world-renowned astrophysicist is critical of a system that forces leading researchers with international reputations to spend between 30 and 50 per cent of their time each year applying for grants in the same way junior colleagues have to, or peer-reviewing grant applications.
