Motorcyclists make up third of ACT road toll - ABC Online

ACT police are stepping up efforts to prevent motorcycle deaths which represent more than third of the ACT's road toll.

Four people riding motorcycles or motorised bikes have died on Canberra roads this year.

Six motorcyclists were killed in 2011.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations Rod Anderson says police will step up their efforts to curb that trend, as motorcyclists make the most of the warmer weather.

"Certainly we see an increase in the number of people who want to get out and about on their motorbikes over the summer period and we encourage people to do that but we want them to do it safely," he said.

"There are certain areas around the ACT where we know motorcyclists tend to exceed the speed limit. We'll be targeting certain areas based on the information that we receive from the community about that sort of behaviour."

Sergeant Anderson says other motorists need to be vigilant around motorcyclists.

"We're fairly concerned with the number of motorcyclists that appear in those sort of statistics and we'll be reminding people about the need to be aware of motorcyclists on our roads and also for motorcyclists to ride carefully," he said.
