Macklin tight-lipped on pokies trial start - The Australian

FAMILIES Minister Jenny Macklin is still to guarantee a trial mandatory pre-commitment technology for poker machines will start in Canberra before the federal election.

Clubs ACT told Ms Macklin a fortnight ago it was not prepared to begin the trial before the poll due in late 2013.

Its stance has cast doubt on whether the trial will happen at all, because if the opposition wins the election it's likely to dump the policy.

Ms Macklin was on Monday asked about the timeframe for the trial start date.

"We're still continuing to discuss the details of the mandatory pre-commitment trial with both the clubs sector here in the ACT, and with the ACT government," she told reporters in Canberra.

Mandatory pre-commitment technology requires gamblers to nominate the amount of money they are prepared to lose on high-loss machines, which can chew through $1200 an hour.
