In a globalised world facing industrial, technological, environmental and population challenges, the focus has been put on the importance of education.
But what role will regional Australia play? And can universities meet the challenges facing country communities?
The Gonski report highlighted the disadvantages regional students face, estimating a 30% gap in education outcomes between regional and metropolitan students.
Presented by Virginia Haussegger, the face of Canberra's ABC TV News since 2001, a Future Forum held in Ballarat will explore what universities can do to close that gap.
The first ABC News 24 Future Forum to be held in Victoria, the news channel has held similar televised debates previously in Cairns, Canberra and Sydney.
Featuring the leaders of some of regional Australia's biggest universities, the panel will also be a part of a debate discussing how they can meet the needs of regional Australia by producing skilled graduates who are workforce-ready, and the role they play in regional development and sustainability.
Panellists will include University of Southern Queensland vice-chancellor and president Jan Thomas, Central Queensland University vice-chancellor and president Scott Bowman, Southern Cross University vice-chancellor Peter Lee, University of Ballarat vice-chancellor David Battersby, University of the Sunshine Coast vice-chancellor and president Greg Hill, and the University of New England Vice-chancellor and CEO Jim Barber.
