IN a disgraceful move reminiscent of some military dictatorship rather than a democracy, our government has in effect declared war on our free press and the electors, the very people who employ them to toil in our better interests. Muzzling the press certainly does not meet that ideal.
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and other frontbench luminaries believe that news reporting cannot be regulated by the industry alone and must meet standards backed by Canberra.
If the Canberra standards Conroy refers to encompass the obvious gross incompetence and obfuscation that Canberra regularly recycles, then, no thanks, we'll pass.
It's obvious that Conroy and his colleagues live in a world of delusion where their actions should be beyond independent scrutiny and public accountability. Unfortunately for them, we want more scrutiny of government, not less.
A free and fearless press is the only body sufficiently competent to deliver. So, I would suggest to Conroy and his vested interests to butt out or we, the people, will remove them from the equation.
