ABOUT 87,000 families a year will receive a baby bonus worth $3000 instead of $5000 for their second or subsequent children, prompting warnings from welfare groups that the poor would suffer and criticism from the Coalition that it was an attack on larger families.
It is the third time the Rudd-Gillard government has cut the payment, which goes to stay-at-home mothers not attached to the workforce.
